Covid-19: ein Brief aus Australien

Eine australische Freundin mit europäischen Wurzeln schrieb mir im Februar folgende Zeilen:

“Our reality in Australia is starkly different to yours in Europe. Actually, this has probably been my latest greatest discovery … how we can live such different lives at different ends of planet earth…”

“COVID19 has not affected us near as badly as you in Europe. Cases are quickly identified, broad free testing enabled containment of the virus and quarantining avoids community spread. We go to cinema, restaurant, sport clubs … we can travel domestic with the risk of COVID19 hitting here or there and being caught in quarantine but it is not dramatic. – The rest of the health system (after slowdown in 2020) is functioning.”

COVID-19 ist eine Naturgewalt, aber Politiker*innen sind es nicht. Laschets Laberkurs ist nicht alternativlos. Australien ist keine Insel, sondern ein Kontinent. Weitere Beispiele für eine gelungene COVID-19 Strategie sind Vietnam, Taiwan, Neuseeland. Lernen könnten wir weiterhin von Portugals erfolgreichem Weg durch die dritte Welle und Israels Impfstrategie.

Wir müssen von unseren Politiker*innen fordern, dass sie endlich auf Wissenschaftler*innen hören, sich kluge Ratschläge von den erfolgreichen Ländern holen und diese anschließend in praktische Politik umsetzen. Wer das nicht schafft, der soll gehen.
