Carl Edward Sagan

„We should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for a Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility and community spirit.“

Garrison Keillor on Obama

Sitting on top of the world

(Keillor’s show on National Public Radio)

(his biography: wikipedia)

„Be happy, dear hearts, and allow yourselves a few more weeks of quiet exultation.

It isn’t gloating, it’s satisfaction at a job well done. He was a superb candidate, serious, professorial but with a flashing grin and a buoyancy that comes from working out in the gym every morning. He spoke in a genuine voice, not senatorial at all. He relished campaigning. He accepted adulation gracefully. He brandished his sword against his opponents without mocking or belittling them. He was elegant, unaffected, utterly American, and now (Wow) suddenly America is cool. Chicago is cool. Chicago!!!

We threw the dice and we won the jackpot and elected a black guy with a Harvard degree, the middle name Hussein and a sense of humor—he said, „I’ve got relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I’ve got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher.“ The French junior minister for human rights said, „On this morning, we all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding before our eyes.“

When was the last time you heard someone from France say they wanted to be American and take a bite of something of ours? Ponder that for a moment. The world expects us to elect pompous yahoos, and instead we have us a 47-year-old prince from the prairie who cheerfully ran the race, and when his opponents threw sand at him, he just smiled back.

He’ll be the first president in history to look really good making a jump shot. He loves his classy wife and his sweet little daughters. At the same time, he knows pop music, American lit and constitutional law. I just can’t imagine anybody cooler. It feels good to be cool, and all of us can share in that, even sour old right-wingers and embittered blottoheads.

Next time you fly to Heathrow and hand your passport to the man with the badge, he’s going to see „United States of America“ and look up and grin. Even if you worship in the church of Fox, everyone you meet overseas is going to ask you about Obama, and you may as well say you voted for him because, my friends, he is your line of credit over there. No need anymore to try to look Canadian…“ more

PJB: As GM Goes, So Goes the GOP

Understandably, Republicans are seething.

When Hank Paulson demanded $700 billion to haul away the trash in the dumpsters of JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs — assuring us we could hold a garage sale of the junk — they rebelled. They acted as the nation, by 100 to one, demanded. They killed the Wall Street bailout…. read on

I guess I like Brooks better since he has responded to the recent dogma as
I think is appropriate. At any rate, I agree with most of this, not all,
but I specifically believe if we are going to retain the supposed
accountability in No Child Left Behind, it would be wise first to address
and include the responsibility of the parents, which is totally absent in
the program. I have read it in it's entirety and there is no mention, not
one, of the people most responsible for a student's attitude toward and
success in the educational process. That pandering, to the parental voting
block, needs to be corrected.

PZ Myers: Pharyngula

„Evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal“

Happy today in Texas

weiter mit Tom:

„Up this AM listening to the pundits. I know the problems are huge. The
financial problem is just starting for the US… Maybe Europe too. All of
this war is „off the books.“ While sitting on the finance committee of the
Denton County Transit Authority I have seen what this spending has done
to… Texas’s ability to build roads for example. Texas sent over 880
million dollars of highway building funds back to Washington in 2007 alone,
to fund Iraq and Bush’s tax cuts. That’s just Texas and just the
transportation funds bucket of money. Just think of all the other buckets of
money, education, health, etc. Multiply that by 50 states. It is mind
boggling. Well, each journey begins with one step. Yesterday, hopefully we
took that first step.
Quote anything I say that you think worthy, my friend.
Happy today in Texas.“

News from Texas

Yes today is the day. Polls here say Obama is ahead in the states the Dems usually win and even in some of the usual Republican States. Not Texas of course, but one could hope. All my
local Republican friends have always said a large turn out or increase in voters is usually a No vote. In this case I think it would be No to more of the same old crap. Of course it could be no to a black man, but most of those are older voters and they always vote in good numbers and the
increases are too great for that to be the case in my political opinion.

Am Abend dann:

10:00 PM – They announced that things have changed. Dogma has had it’s day.
Great news and now I can go to bed, for I have work to do tomorrow…no matter who is President. Thank, God, that Americans have moved from the darkness into the light. This is a great blow to extremism. Osama ain’t going to be happy about Obama.

No Time To Think! – WAZ: Dessous und Volksbibeln? Entlassungen!

Teil 1 USA

Die beiden Journalisten Howard Rosenberg und Charles Feldman malen in ihrem neuen Buch „No Time To Think – The Menace of Media Speed and the 24-hour News Cycle“ ein düsteres Bild über die Medien in den USA.

„Früher waren Nachrichten all das, was neu war.

Before I go to sleep: A Texan friend commenting – No wonder it is going to be a long cold winter for conservative Republicans.

This would be a lot easier if I could speak or write in the German language. Ah, well, Americans are and isolated lot and we suffer for it. I have begun to speak my political mind in all areas of my public involvement, from friends and neighbors to associates in the public service area of the transit authority board I serve on. I have received several comments from my elected officials and transit board members about my comments. Since I live in one of the most conservative Republican areas of the country, I receive mostly comment from those who disagree with me about the policies. The following is my latest letter to the editor of the local newpaper:

I was raised by fiscally conservative, Goldwater Republicans. I have worked to promote the reasonable Republican ideals of smaller government and a responsible population. I am not a person who believes in ideology over facts. I am performance based and data driven. The Republican Party of my youth has disappeared and is now made up of ideologues that refuse to recognize anything other than their dogma. The combination of the neo and social conservatives has put to ruin the Republican Party. The likes of Tom Delay and Dick Cheney and their decisions to pursue an extreme agenda are the reason for the fall of a reasonable conservatism. After seeing Palin’s performance I would say that the most diplomatic thing I can say is it was…embarrassing. I imagine that McCain’s two heroes, TR and Goldwater are rolling over in their graves. I don’t believe her choice reflects well on McCain’s decision-making or temperament. I don’t believe anyone who would vote to put her one step from the Presidency with a 72-year-old malignant melanoma patient as President has the nation’s best interest at heart. I believe that quite the contrary such a position indicates they have confused dogma with patriotism. I am insulted and tired of being told that I am not patriotic because I don’t hew to current Republican or anyone else’s ideology. All Republicans appear to have left is fear and name-calling. No wonder it is going to be a long cold winter for conservative Republicans.
